When Do the Benefits Begin?

Supplemental Security Income Lawyers

If you are approved for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, you will receive a monthly payment from the Social Security Administration (SSA). You should expect to receive your first SSI payment the first full month after you applied or became eligible for benefits. The benefit amount may change from month to month depending on your income and living arrangements.

We Can Help

Understanding your monthly benefits can be confusing. The Supplemental Security Income lawyers at Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos & Newlin are familiar with the complex Social Security system and we can help you make sense of your benefits. How it Works

According to the SSA, your first, second, and third month benefit amounts will be based on your income during your first month of eligibility. If your income is different during the first month than the second and third months the SSA will adjust your payments based on “nonrecurring income.”

Your future payments will typically be based on your income for the two months before. If you experience a change in your monthly income such as a gift from a relative or friend, an inheritance, a lottery win, etc. you need to report that income to the SSA. Failure to do so can result in an overpayment, which the SSA will require to be repaid.
